Introduction

The National Management Association (NMA), founded in 1925, is the world's largest nonprofit professional management association, representing more than 215 chapters and approximately 56,000 managers throughout the United States. The NMA staff works with companies, at their request, to assist in laying groundwork to handle the details of chapter formation.

NMA is dedicated to the expansion of members' management skills and their recognition as professionals and to the promotion of the American Enterprise System. The Association publishes a quarterly magazine, Manage; offers access to numerous training courses, programs, films, and self-study materials at minimal cost; supports the Certified Professional Manager program; sponsors national conferences; and provides a wide range of chapter leadership guidance for program development.

East Tennessee Leadership Chapter of the NMA provides access to all the resources of the larger association and tailors its program to the needs of its Chapter members. The chapter sponsors meetings every month, which offer members an opportunity to meet all levels of managers across the company as well as hear prominent managers discuss the latest leadership issues. The chapter newsletter, Manager, keeps members informed of chapter programs and issues. The chapter also sponsors training programs, awards, and community service projects. In addition, the chapter sponsors the American Free Enterprise Speech Contest, a contest for local high school students to expound on issues related to free enterprise. Students receive monetary awards for their performance. The top speaker gets an opportunity to participate in the national contest.

Participation in the East Tennessee Leadership Chapter of the NMA offers opportunities to develop leadership skills as officers and committee members. Working together with other managers and getting to know company leaders better reduces the vastness and remoteness of our many locations. Becoming a member of NMA is a great way to make new friends and acquaintances, mingle with the movers and shakers in management, and most importantly, become a leader yourself.
